Hungarian folk songs from village source recordings, cozy vibe, friendly people. Whether you're new to the style or an experienced singer, come join us!

Founded in 2010, the Hungarian Folk Singing Circle ("Népdalkör" in Hungarian) meets every week to learn beautiful old Hungarian folk songs, led by Zina Bozzay. Songs are taught directly from village source recordings, aurally, with extra language support, breaking down the elements of the songs, background information, and translations. Source recordings and song words are provided to students. This will be an 8-week class session teaching traditional Hungarian village songs from around the Carpathian Basin, particularly areas rich in old songs, such as Erdély (Transylvania), Moldva (Moldavia), Dunántúl (Transdanubia), and Felföld (former northern Hungary). There will be a range of songs, from fun dance songs to beautiful ornate laments. There are performance opportunities for experienced singers who are interested.

Please share this with any friends who may be interested, and RSVP with interest!

Singers of all ages, cultural backgrounds, and levels of experience in the style are welcome. The class is conducted primarily in English (besides the songs themselves), and is open to Hungarian speakers and non-speakers. If you would like support with pronunciation, you are welcome to come at 6:30 before the first class. Singers must be able to accurately match pitch. Bring a thirst for knowledge and good energy!
